What is a Certificate of Destruction (COD) title?
A COD title is a "certificate of destruction" title. This means it is only allowed to be titled in certain states (please see list). Usually inspections are not done by underwriters in person when they declare a COD title to vehicles. For example, we have vehicles that only needed a starter replaced and carpet dried out that were considered COD, while other vehicles were COMPLETELY submerged are not titled COD. Most of this title work is usually a result of mass spread weather damages (hurricanes, tornadoes, hail damage, etc.) and makes it easier for insurance companies to cut down on costs of having an underwriter go in person to evaluate hundreds and sometimes thousands of cars.
While some of these vehicles are completely damaged beyond repair, we don't understand why the vehicle gets a COD title when there is very little to repair, if any at all.
Most states still allow COD titled cars to be transferred to rebuilt and drive on the roads and most have zero problem passing inspections.
This is a great opportunity for someone who lives in a state that allows transfers to get perfectly normal cars for a discount.
